Caucasia Themes & Connections 
Look for important themes and issues in the book. Analyze and explain them in your own words. Connect them to readings, discussions, films etc. we've covered in class so far this semester. Use particular scenes and/or dialogues to illustrate your points.

This essay needs a lot of work and is either a near failing essay or an essay that needs to be entirely redesigned/reorganized and rewritten. (Between 60 to 75 possible points with 60 being a D-).

Good/Fair (B- to C+)

This is an essay that is working for the most part, but still reads more like a rough draft than a completed essay. (Between 75 to 90 possible points with 75 being a C+).

Excellent/Good (A+ to B)

This essay succeeds in reading like a confidently finished product. This essay has been edited, stylized, and completed with an holistic awareness of the assignment, structure, formatting and audience. (Between 90 to 100 possible points, with 90 being a B).

This includes themes analysis, and how well writer addresses the assignment and/or understands assignment's purpose.

Almost Fair/Poor (C- to D)

- Content is incomplete.
- Major points are not clear and /or persuasive.
- Unclear if writer understands purpose (assignment).
Good/Fair (B- to C+)

- Content is not comprehensive and /or persuasive.
- Major points are addressed, but not well supported. (Topic sentences present but not supported).
- Understanding appears to be inadequate or does not address course concepts.
- Content is inconsistent with regard to purpose (assignment) and clarity of thought.
Excellent/Good (A+ to B)

- Content is comprehensive, accurate, and addresses the assignment.
- Ideas are presented in a persuasive manner.
- Major points are stated clearly and are well supported.
- Research is adequate, timely and addresses course concepts.
- Content and purpose of the writing are clear.
Organization & Structure

paragraphs, topic sentences, supporting sentences, and awareness of structural style.

Almost Fair/Poor (C- to D)

- Organization and lack of structure detract from the message of the writer.
- Paragraphs disjointed and lack an awareness of transition of thoughts.
- Topic sentences missing or unclear.
- Supporting sentences too lengthy/wordy, or repetitive.
Good/Fair (B- to C+)

- Structure of the paragraphs are not easy to follow.
- Paragraph transitions need improvement.
-Sentences need more attention to purpose.
Excellent/Good (A+ to B)

- Structure of the writer's paragraphs is clear and easy to follow.
- Paragraphs built of good supporting sentences that speak to a clear topic sentence in each paragraph.
Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling

This includes all mechanical (proper usage) and technical (formal writing) issues with writer's essay.

Almost Fair/Poor (C- to D)

- Paper contains numerous grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors.
- Language uses jargon or conversational tone.
- Writer does not appear to have addressed edit remarks from rough draft phase.
Good/Fair (B- to C+)

- Paper contains few grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors.
- Language lacks clarity or includes the use of some jargon, passive constructions, or conversational tone.
Excellent/Good (A+ to B)

- Rules of grammar, usage, and punctuation are followed; spelling is correct.
- Language is clear and precise; sentences display consistently strong, varied structure.
Connections

Whether or not writer demonstrates a recognition of class themes within the themes of the novel

Almost Fair/Poor (C- to D)

Connections are strained, vaguely made, or unclear
Good/Fair (B- to C+)

Writer does not address themes either/or in the novel or connected to the novel
Excellent/Good (A+ to B)

- Paper makes solid and complex connections between themes in class, readings, films & discussions thusfar and the novel
