Speaking well is a very important part of your writing. As writers and speakers, you will be expected to write clearly and engage others. Class discussions provide an opportunity to delve deeper into the topics at hand.

Quality of Discussion 20 pts How do your comments further the discussion and respond to the question or connect with a point made by your classmate?	Unacceptable The discussion comments do not further the discussion or do not adequately address the question and/or topic of discussion. The comment shows a lack of engagement in the discussion.	Acceptable The discussion comments are not consistently thorough in addressing the question and/or topic. The comments do not consistently show respect to his/her classmates or fail to consistently further or deepen the discussion.	Good The discussion comments are usually thorough in addressing the question and/or topic in a way that respects his/her classmates and furthers or deepens the discussion but some comments need to be more relevant.	Exemplary Student is consistent in thoroughly addressing the question and/or topic in a way that respects his/her classmate and furthers or deepens the discussion.
Participation 20 pts Did you meet the discussion requirements of 2 to 3 comments?	Unacceptable Student does not meet the requirement of at least two or three substantial comments.	Acceptable Student has met the requirement of two or three comments for each section but the comments are not entirely substantial.	Good Student has met the requirement of two or three comments for and the comments are good but could be strengthened.	Exemplary Student has met the requirement of two/three comments which are consistently substantial.
Support of conclusions 20 pts How well do you explain and support your conclusions in your discussion comments using resources and/or life experience?	Unacceptable Student does not adequately support conclusions made.	Acceptable Although there is some support for conclusions made, the support is either not clear or not fully developed.	Good Student provides support for conclusion although not consistently.	Exemplary Student provides consistent support from course resources and/or life experience to support his/her conclusions.
Thoroughness 20 pts Were your comments substantial enough to address the topic yet succinct (nicely brief)?	Unacceptable Discussion comments are not adequately thought out before the speaker speaks.	Acceptable The discussion comments lack a thorough awareness of the topic. The comments are either not developed or are too verbose.	Good Most discussion comments are completed well but some comments are weak or not fully developed or too wordy.	Exemplary All discussion comments are well thought out, yet succinct (brief) at the same time.
