Written Response Rubric for Teachers 
This rubric will be used to assess written responses posted by students. Criteria will assess if student answered the prompt, used question stem in response, constructed full sentences, edited their response prior to posting, clearly communicated their response, the relevance of response, connections to learning, presence of evidence to support response and posting etiquette.

Student understands the question, prompt or discussion but answers the question with something missing:
-Answers the question but there are issues with clarity.
-Answer or thought lacks explanation or elaboration.
-Missing part of a multiple question response.
Proficient

Student understands the question, prompt or discussion and can fully answer the question, even if the question contains multiple parts.
Response intent is understandable and well thought out.
Advanced

Student fully understands the question or prompt and adds new insight to the discussion or topic by contributing a new view, opinion, relevant information, new thought/question or new learning that enhances the discussion.

Student response contains the topic, discussion or question stem.
Response contains full sentences but may or may not be fully clear or concise with all thoughts; but errors do not confuse the reader.
Advanced

Student response contains the topic, discussion or question stem.
Response contains full sentences. Student conveys thoughts and ideas clearly and vocabulary is at the appropriate level.
Editing Skills

Did you check for errors and clarity before posting?

Below Basic

Written responses contain numerous grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors that distract the reader and cause misinterpretation or misunderstanding.
Basic

Written responses include some grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors that distract the reader or cause the reader to question meaning but does not interfere with overall understanding.
Proficient

Written responses contain minimal grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors and those errors do not cause distraction or misinterpretation.
Advanced

Written responses are free of grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors.
Suporting Evidence

Did you support your thoughts with connections for your audience?

Response does not contain supportive evidence from a source. (Ex: Text, peer response, previous knowledge or personal connection.)
Basic

Response contains irrelevant, incomplete or invalid supportive evidence from a source. (Ex:Text, peer response, previous knowledge or personal connection.)
Proficient

Response contains relevant supportive evidence from a source. (Ex: Text, peer response, previous knowledge or personal connection.)
Advanced

Response contains substantial supportive evidence from a source. (Ex: Text, peer response, previous knowledge or personal connection.) AND conveys some subject area synthesis or learning connection.

Proficient

Response is phrased positively and shows respect and interest in the viewpoints of others.
Advanced

Response is phrased positively and demonstrates respect, interest, and sensitivity to others
AND/OR
Encourages, supports, or celebrates others views or creativity.
