The purpose of this rubric is to give students the expectations for writing a comparing/contrasting essay. They are expected to create a strong thesis statement and make use of in-text citations.

The introduction includes a vague, somewhat connective thesis statement and may include the works that will be used to support it. The conclusion vaguely wraps up the essay and supports the thesis.
Fair - 2

The introduction a vague thesis statement that is not connective to the works used. The conclusion is weak/incomplete.
Poor - 1

The introduction does not include a thesis statement or the works that will be used to support it. The conclusion is weak or nonexistent.
Compare/Contrasting points

Excellent - 4

There are at least (3) three clear comparing/contrasting examples between the two works in regard to the thesis.
Good - 3

There are at least (2) two clear comparing/contrasting examples between the two works in regard to the thesis.
Fair - 2

There is (1) one clear comparing/contrasting example between the two works in regard to the thesis.
Poor - 1

Student has not provided any compare/contrasting examples between the two works in regard to the thesis.
Essay Structure

Excellent - 4

Student has included an introduction, two clear bod paragraphs, and a conclusion in the essay. There is cohesion in the essay and all the points make sense. There are no (or very few) grammar mistakes, and they do not take away from the overall essay.
Good - 3

Essay reflects an introduction, two body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesion is mostly present throughout the essay. There are some grammar mistakes, but they do not take away from the overall essay.
Fair - 2

There are at least 2 paragraphs. There are some grammar mistakes, but they do not take away from the overall essay.
Poor - 1

There isn't any real form or format to this essay. Grammar is poor and makes the essay difficult to understand.
Citations

Excellent - 4

In-text citations are used accurately and with minimal errors.
Good - 3

In-text citations are used somewhat accurately and with some errors.
Fair - 2

At least one in-text citation is used and may be done correctly.
Poor - 1

There are no in-text citations used.
