Excellent

All of the required components of the paper are present. Content is well-developed with cited supporting resources. The paper reflects collegiate-level work.

Most of the required components of the paper are present, but some additional information is needed. The content is adequately-developed, and the paper reflects decent collegiate-level work.
Fair

Several of the required components are missing or have been poorly-developed. More information is needed to complete the content. The paper reflects mediocre work.
Poor

The paper is minimally-developed and reflects poor work. Several required components are missing.
Fail

The student did not submit a paper or the content is completely unsatisfactory.
Critical Thinking

The writer uses logical and critical thinking in reflecting on theme and cited texts. Derives insights from texts/materials discussed in class.

Excellent

Implications are clearly explicated and the content demonstrates excellent critical thinking skills and independent thought processes.

One or more implications are given and are sufficiently clarified, and the content reflects adequate critical thinking skills and mostly independent thought.
Fair

Content reflects mediocre exercise of critical thinking and little independent thought.
Poor

Content reflects minimal or no exercise of independent critical thinking at all.
Fail

The student did not submit a paper or the critical thinking component is completely unsatisfactory.

Integrates related course materials and insights derived from critical thinking and personal experience.

Excellent

The student's writing reflects a distinctive understanding and integration of the text with personal experience, and offers deep relevant insights.
Good

The student offers an adequate understanding and integration of the text with personal experience. The paper reflects a good attempt to integrate/synthesize experiences and insights.
Fair

The student's writing reflects a mediocre attempt to integrate/synthesize. Insights are poor or weak, and the material needs further explanation.
Poor

The student's writing reflects a minimal attempt to relate the text with personal insight, and insights are not provided.
Fail

The student did not submit a paper, or the textbook integration component is unsatisfactory.
Grammar & Organization

The grammar and organization of the paper is collegiate-level.

Excellent

The paper is very well organized and the content is logical and understandable in layout. No grammatical errors are present.
