Creative Fiction: Genre Writing
Plan: This rubric will be used to assess students' story "snips" in Chapter XII. Students' stories should bring the moment in the fairy ring alive using descriptive visceral and conceptual details. Compelling language, sensory details, and magical elements should mimic Gaiman's prose style.

Organization

Sequencing

Exceeds Expectations

The piece is exceptionally put together, with every word in the story exceptionally crafted for a clearly explained purpose used to advance the plot, narrative or characters.
Meets Expectations

The piece is pieced in a way that is consistent and competent. Details are placed in a logical order, but the way in which they are presented/introduced sometimes makes the writing less interesting.
Emerging Proficient

The piece is poorly pieced together, with only a vague attempt at consistency. Some details are not in a logical or expected order, and this distracts the reader.
Needs Work

The piece is haphazardly pieced together, with little to no regard for consistency. Many details are not in a logical or expected order.
Conflict

Faithful to character

Exceeds Expectations

There are three genuine fears that attempt to lure the narrator and clear uses of texts for calming the character. Transitions are used to effectively keep the story moving.
Meets Expectations

Three fears are explored int the piece and texts are included for calming the character. Transitions are used to keep the story moving.
Emerging Proficient

Three fears are included in the piece and texts are used for calming the character, althought it is not clear how or why they are calming. Some transitions are used, but seem awkward.
Needs Work

Fears are introduced in the piece and texts are included for calming the character, althought it is not clear why the narrator is afraid nor how or why they are calming. There are few or no transitions.
Tone

Faithful to original

Exceeds Expectations

Characters behave as they would in the original story. Setting is tied to the fair ring, and there is evidence of something magical or supernatural. Story reads exactly like Gaiman's story.
Meets Expectations

Characters behave more or less as they would from the original. Story mostly reads like a chapter from original, with a few differences.
Emerging Proficient

Characters behave differently from original. Fairy ring setting and/or magic is only briefly touched on. Story does not read like other chapters in the book.
Needs Work

Story wildly differs from original, in characterization, setting, and use of magic. Story reads like it is from a completely different book.
Reader Appeal

Exceeds Expectations

The story captivates the reader immediately, and fully engages the reader to immerse in the narrative using exceptionally effective writing skills to create a tone and/or theme.
Meets Expectations

The story effectively catches the reader's attention, and directs that attention to further immerse the reader.
Emerging Proficient

The story attempts to catch the reader's attention, but does so in a way that makes little sense to the rest of the story.
Needs Work

The story does not attempt to catch the reader's attention in the opening sentence.
MLA formatting

Exceeds Expectations

Story is fproperly formatted using MLA Manuscript formatting. Header, heading, and body all adhere to MLA Manuscript formatting.
Meets Expectations

Student has attempted to use MLA manuscript formatting, but there may be mistakes in one of the following: header, heading, or body.
Emerging Proficient

Student has attempted to use MLA manuscript formatting, but there may be mistakes in two of the following: header, heading, or body.
Needs Work

Meets Expectations
