Vocabulary Square Rubric

When asked to complete a Word Square for a vocabulary word that was presented in the lesson, vocabulary scholars will: write the word, give the definition or definitions for the word, provide at least one synonym, at least on antonym, illustrate the meaning with a picture, write a complete sentence using the word with good context clues to support meaning.

Definitions	Innovating The definition of the word is clear and correct. It is stated in terms that the I understand. I did not use the word itself in the definition.	Applying The definition is not complete. Or The definition does not clearly explain the meaning of the word and show my understanding of the word.	Developing The definition is not correct or it is missing.
Illustration/Symbol	Innovating I drew a picture of a simple object or event that creates a visual image of the meaning. The context of the picture connects to the word.	Applying I included a picture, but it does not provide the clear meaning of the vocabulary word.	Developing I did not include a picture. Or I included a picture does not illustrate the meaning of the vocabulary word.
Synonyms/Antonyms	Innovating I show my knowledge of the word by listing a synonym(s) and an antonym(s) to make additional connections.	Applying The words I listed do not match the meaning of the word.	Developing I did not included any synonyms and/or antonyms.
