Compare/Contrast Essay Middle School Rubric 
The purpose of this rubric is to allow the younger student to know what the expectations are for writing a comparing/contrasting essay. This can also be used for older students who lack the appropriate skills to write this type of essay.

Exceeds Standard

Sentences are of an appropriate length, make sense, and is free of subject/verb disagreements.

Sentences are of an appropriate length, mostly make sense, but there are some subject/verb disagreements.
Partially Meets Standard

Essay paragraphs and sentences are too short or don't make sense. There are not always thesis statements.

Essay is unreadable due to too many errors.

Exceeds Standard

There are clear details and examples that compare and contrast the two stories. These examples do not include retelling of the story. The student was thorough in the explanation.

There are some details and examples that compare and contrast the two stories. There may be some retelling of the story which is irrelevant or the student was not thorough in the explanation.
Partially Meets Standard

There are few details and examples that compare and contrast the two stories. The student spent too much time retelling the story which is irrelevant or the student did not have enough in the explanation.
Attempted But Doesn't Meet Standard

Student has not provided enough examples in either section. The student retold the stories or had little to no explanation.
