Assist patient to high-Fowlers position, unless contraindicated. Apply pulse oximeter Measure vital signs
Gather supplies Determine length of tube to be inserted and mark Lubricate tube and gently insert to back of throat, patient neck extends back, once tube has passed nasopharynx flex patient head forward and advance tube as patient swallows.
Tube secured Verify placement by pH check- (pH 0-5) if fluid administered radio graphic placement check is necessary.
Check GRV- draw 30 ml of air in 60 ml syringe, connect to end of tube. Inject air and pull back slowly and aspirate total amount. Irrigate- flush tube with 30 ml water Suction- hook up tube to low/intermittent suction.
Dispose of supplies Preform hand hygiene return patient to comfortable position Provide patient safety Leave room tidy
