Character Development Use of descriptive language to describe physical and behavioral character traits.
	Level 4 Character desciptions evoke vivid physical imagery and unique personalities and behavioral traits. 4 pts	Level 3 Character descriptions are well-developed, using clear descriptive language 3 pts	Level 2 Character descriptions clearly disriminate characters' physical and behavioral differences. 2 pts	Level 1 Character descriptions are basic and concrete 1 pts
Physical Traits Description evokes strong visual image of character	Level 4 Descriptions include use of figurative language to paint a picture for the reader Examples: eyes like crystal balls, hair like spun gold, moves like the wind	Level 3 Comrehensive description that includes subtle or unique details in appearance, movement, expression. Examples: delicate, wiry, rumpled, limping	Level 2 Uses at least 2 adjectives that provide a clear description of characters' general appearance Examples:dirty, neat, tremendous, colorful	Level 1 Uses 1-2 basic adjectives to describe how the characters look. Examples: hairy, short, pretty
Behavioral Traits Description describes personality traits, habits, likes/dislikes.	Level 4 Descriptions include use of figurative language that gives the reader insight into the character's intentions and temperment Examples: stubborn as a mule, he's a couch potato, slippery as an eel	Level 3 Comrehensive description that includes subtle or unique details in actions and personality Examples: thoughtful, careful, bold	Level 2 Uses at least 2 adjectives that provide a clear description of characters' behavior. Examples: sneaky and quiet, loud and angry	Level 1 Uses 1-2 basic adjectives to describe how the characters act. Examples: mean, happy, grouchy
Fluency Description of character is smooth and cohesive.	Level 4 Character was colorful and well thought out and all descriptions complemented each other.	Level 3 There is 1 conflict in the description of the character. i.e., She has graceful hands. She has short stubby fingers.	Level 2 There are 2 conflicts in the description of the character. i.e., She has graceful hands. She has short stubby fingers.	Level 1 There are more than 2 conflicts in description of character. i.e., She has graceful hands. She has short stubby fingers.
