Short Story Performance Task 
Students will be scored on their ability to chose a character from a story read, how the character and student interact, how they portray their actions and thoughts, identify events, problem/solutions, character traits, and probable alternate story endings. Students' writing must be consistent with that character's beliefs, actions, and personality from the story they had read.

Student failed to identify either the title, author setting, or the character of the story. Student shows no evidence of interacting with the character in the story.

All events either explain the effect of the main problem on the story, or show how characters are attempting to solve.
Meets standards

Many of the events listed relate to the problem of the story, or how it was solved.
Reaching standards

Some of the events listed relate to the main problem in the story, or how it was solved. Some events are unimportant details or simply interesting.
Below standards

The details given are random events or incorrect facts. The events listed don't relate to the story. They don't explain how a solution was reached.

Correctly identifies a main problem of the story and clearly explains how it was solved.
Meets standards

Identifies a problem and clearly explains the solution.
Reaching standards

a problem and solution were given, but were given as incomplete thoughts. Ideas were not thoroughly explained.

Student suggests a solution that does not work to solve the problem.

Understanding of the character is accurate and is based on true and appropriate story events.
Meets standards

Understanding of the character is accurate and based on story events.
Reaching standards

Understanding of the character is mostly appropriate. Some of the traits may not be supported by story events.
Below standards

Understanding of the character is incorrect or suggest traits that cannot be proven by story events.
Mechanics:

Exceeds standards

Skillfully uses conventions (capitalization, punctuation, spelling , and grammar) beyond grade level expectations. There are NO errors.
Meets standards

Makes few errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling that do NOT distract the reader.
Reaching standards

Makes some errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling that distract the reader.
Below standards

Make MANY errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling that seriously impair the reading.
Neatness:

Exceeds standards

Students penmanship exceeds expectations, writing is legible, margins are correctly aligned, and letters are appropriately spaced.
Meets standards

Student writes legibly with correct margins and letter spacing.
Reaching standards

Students writes somewhat legibly with inconsistent use of margins and/or letter spacing.
Below standards

The writing is illegible and extremely difficult to understand. Has significant problems with margins and/or letter spacing.
