Student has a clearly demarked introduction which contains interesting background information and succinctly states the student's dominant impression about the topic with an appropriate thesis statement.

Student does not have a clearly defined body to the essay. The student does not use details, examples, information or reasons to support their opinion.
Fair

Student has a body paragraph or paragraphs but does not used well thought-out reasons, examples details or reasons to support their opinion.
Good

Student has a body paragraph or paragraphs which use some details, examples, information or reasons to support their opinion.
Excellent

Student has more than one body paragraph which clearly states a supporting sentence and backs it up with a cohesive argument using details, examples, reasons or information.
Conclusion

Poor

Student does not have a concluding paragraph, or one that can be clearly distinguished by the marker.
Fair

Student has a concluding paragraph that does not summarize the argument being made or make a concluding statement.
Good

The student briefly summarizes the argument being made and makes a concluding statement.
Excellent

The student has a concluding paragraph which effectively summarizes the argument and makes a clear concluding statement.
Cohesion

Poor

Transitions are not used enough or they are used incorrectly. Details and or examples are too general or not appropriate.
Fair

Some transitions are used. Some transitions are used incorrectly. The essay moves from general to specific.
Good

The use of cohesive devices or transitions is mostly correct to allow the flow of information. The essay contains effective use of elements to move it from general to specific.
Excellent

Cohesive devices or transitions are used effectively to improve the flow of information. The essay has global topics, hooks and extensions as well as good details and examples.
