Level 1: Novice

Level 2: Intermediate

Has a topic and an opinion, but the writing doesn't always stay on the topic.
Level 3: Proficient

The topic is clearly stated.
The opinion about the topic is clearly stated.
Level 4: Above Proficient

Explains something more about the topic or a connection is made between the topic and broader ideas.
Details/Elaboration

Level 1: Novice

No details provided or tries to add details to writing which may be untrue or unimportant.
Level 2: Intermediate

Some details are added in writing with support from peers or adults.

Ideas may not be fully elaborated or details may be not enough to support opinion.
Level 3: Proficient

Writing includes important and descriptive details, facts, or elaboration that support the opinion or reasons.

Details are explained, not simply listed.
Level 4: Above Proficient

Elaborates using a variety of important details, examples to support opinion or explain reasons.
