Focus/Content The writing is about a specific main idea with supporting details	Poor The writing is on more than one unfocused topic. The main idea is unclear and the sentences are unrelated.	Fair The writing is about one topic but the idea is not developed and some of the sentences may be off the topic	Good The writing has one topic with supporting details.	Excellent The writing has one main topic with many supporting details. The writing has a beginning, middle and end.
Organization Good flow of ideas by sequence or main idea + details	Poor Writing is disorganized and does not make sense	Fair Most of the writing is organized but some of it does not make sense	Good The writing is organized in a way that makes sense	Excellent The writing is well organized. There is a good flow from the main idea to the supporting details
Style/Voice Interesting sentences, descriptive words and word choice	Poor The writing is confusing or boring. The sentences all sound the same and little or no interesting words are used	Fair The writing is understandable but is not very interesting. Conventions Sentence formation, spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization	Poor The writing has many punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and/or spelling mistakes. The sentences are difficult to understand. Many sentence fragments, no attention to correct capitalization, spelling interferes with understanding and little or no punctuation.	Fair The writing has some of the correct conventions but is still a bit difficult to understand. May still have fragments and run-ons, some punctuation but may not be used correctly, use of capitals but not always correctly and is beginning to spell high frequency words correctly but not making use of the spelling patterns learned or the words posted around the room	Good The writing has a few convention mistakes and sentences are fairly easy to understand. Most sentences end with periods and begin with capitals. High frequency words and words around the room are spelled correctly.	Excellent The writing has no convention mistakes. Sentences are easy to understand and show variety. High frequency words, words around the room and spelling words are spelled correctly. Unknown words are spelled in an understandable way.
