Array City Rubric
Objective:Construct arrays and write matching multiplication equations to develop a deeper understanding of multiplication and factors. Arrays should depict a city skyline in which building's windows represent equal groups of objects aligned in rows and columns (an array). Array city should depict the factor pairs of a product. Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1Interpret products of whole numbers. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.2Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers.

A. Construct an Array

Use arrays to model multiplication.

Does NOT Meet

Student's array does not correspond to the assigned multiplication number sentence. Arrays do not show the factor pairs of a product.
Needs Improvement

Student does not understand how to write equations to represent the way he/she sees figures organized. 1-2 arrays correctly represented. Most arrays show the factor pairs of the product.
Meets Expectations

Student understands how to write equations to represent the way he/she sees figures organized. 3-4 arrays correctly represented. Arrays show the factor pairs of the product.
Exceeds Expectations

Student performed above basic instructions of creating arrays. 5 arrays were correctly represented. Arrays show the factor pairs of the product.
B. Multiplication Equation

Write a multiplication equation to match the array in which they have created. (e.g. 2x4=8)

Does NOT Meet

Student has 5 or more errors and does not understand how to write an equation to represent the way he/she sees figures organized.
Needs Improvement

Student has 3-4 errors in writing an equation to represent the way he/she sees figures organized.
Meets Expectations

Student has 1-2 errors in writing an equation to represent the way he/she sees figures organized.
Exceeds Expectations

Student has 0 errors in writing an equation to represent the way he/she sees figures organized. Scholar also includes 2 or more accurate multiplication equations in their illustration using various objects to add more details.
Division Equation

Write a corresponding division equation to match the multiplication related fact.

Does NOT Meet

Student has 5 or more errors and does not understand how to write a corresponding equation to match the multiplication related fact.
Needs Improvement

Student has 3-4 errors in writing an equation to represent the the whole.
Meets Expectations

Student has 1-2 errors in writing an equation to represent the whole.
Exceeds Expectations

Student has 0 errors in writing an equation to represent the whole. Scholar also includes 2 or more corresponding division equations in their illustration to add extra details to the scene.
C. Creativity and Neatness

Used creativity in the materials selected to construct a neatly arranged array.

Does NOT Meet

Student did not construct any arrays.
Needs Improvement

Student did not place much emphasis on neatness and/or creativity.
Meets Expectations

Student's arrays were carefully and neatly constructed.
Exceeds Expectations

Student's arrays were constructed using creative materials, and his/her effort in neatness and creativity exceeded expectations.
