5-Paragraph Informative Essay - The Help 
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of writing a 5-paragraph essay utilizing the writing process of creating a thesis statement, planning, organizing, writing, evaluating (referring back to statement in conclusion) and revising. Essay must have 5 paragraphs minimum, with a thesis statement regarding whether "separate but equal" actually worked in the 1950s or today.

Thesis Statement & Response

Excelling 80-100

Presents a clearly focused thesis statement, that addresses the issue and sets the exposition (stages setting well).
Proficient (70-80)

Presents a focused thesis statement, that somewhat addresses the issue and sets the exposition (stages setting).
Adequate (60-70)

Presents a vaguely focused thesis statement, that tries to set the stage for further writing.
Developing (50-60)

Attempts to address thesis statement, but with little or no success in
establishing a focus.
Beginning (<50)

Does not attempt to address a thesis statement (prompt).
Organization

Excelling 80-100

Establishes a clear and logical organization. A minimum of opening and concluding paragraph with at least 3 body paragraphs, each focused on a different set of details. Effective transitions are present to bridge between paragraphs.
Proficient (70-80)

Uses an identifiable
organizational plan. Transitions are used to bridge paragraphs. Missing a paragraph, yet does a decent job.
Adequate (60-70)

Shows some evidence of an organizational plan. Some transitions are used to bridge paragraphs. Missing a paragraph, missing details and poor transitions.
Developing (50-60)

Fails to organize ideas. A very limited use of transitions are used between paragraphs.
Beginning (<50)

Contains no organization or ideas.
Development & Details

Excelling 80-100

Achieves coherent
development with specific and relevant details and examples. Cites page numbers. Concludes with a return to thesis statement.
Proficient (70-80)

Has focused, but occasionally uneven development; incorporates some specific detail. Vaguely returns to thesis statement in the conclusion.
Adequate (60-70)

Has some development but lacks specific details; may be limited to a listing, repetitions, or generalizations. Has little mention in conclusion of thesis.
Developing (50-60)

Demonstrates little development; usually lacks details or examples or presents irrelevant information. Does not refer to thesis statement in the conclusion.
Beginning (<50)

Demonstrates no development; usually lacks details or examples or presents irrelevant information.
