Answer to Response	Level Four The response very clearly answers the question posed. The answer is very specific and related to the themes or characters in the story.	Level Three The response clearly answers the question posed. The answer is somewhat specific and related to the themes or characters in the story.	Level Two The response somewhat answers the questions posed. The answer is not related to the themes or characters in the story.	Level One The response does not answer the question posed. The answer provided is completely off-topic.
Proof for Response	Level Four The answer to the question is very clearly supported with evidence from the text. Specific examples from the text are used to add proof and evidence provided is thoroughly explained.	Level Three The answer to the question is clearly supported with evidence from the text. Some specific examples from the text are used to add proof for the answer provided.	Level Two There is little support for the answer provided. Few examples from the text are used.	Level One The answer is not supported using evidence from the text.
Extension and Connections	Level Four A relevant and interesting connection is made to the text. Specific examples are provided to extend answer. Response shows excellent insight and understanding of the theme.	Level Three A relevant connection is made to the text. Some examples are provided to extend answer. Response shows good insight and understanding of the theme.	Level Two A connection is provided but no insight is offered. No examples are provided to extend answer. Understanding of the theme is limited.	Level One No extension or connection is provided to support response.
Organization & Mechanics	Level Four Writing is very well organized and interesting to read. Entry is to the point, in complete sentences, free of spelling errors and uses correct grammar.
