*Uses 8-9 preterite verbs appropriately.
* Includes at least three different forms correctly within the writing (yo, tú, ...).

*May include other tenses as appropriate.

*Identifies 7-9 correctly used preterite verbs.
Novice High

*Uses at least 5-7 preterite verbs appropriately.

*May use the same verb more than 2 times in different forms or includes 2 rather than 3 or more different forms in the preterite tense.

*Identifies at least 4 correctly used preterite verbs.
Novice Mid

*Uses more present than preterite tense
*Consistently does not have the correct subject verb agreement.

*Has multiple other errors in preterite tense conjugations.

*Leaves verbs in the infinitive (not conjugated) that should be conjugated.
AND/OR
*Uses the same verb multiple times.

*Does NOT identify preterite verbs in their writing, or most of the words the student highlights are not verbs.
Comprehensibility

*Writing can be understood readily by heritage speakers used to the writing of non-heritage speakers.

*Writing is often comprehensible to heritage speakers used to the writing of non-heritage speakers, but gaps in comprehension may occur.

*There are multiple basic errors in grammar, word choice, punctuation and/or spelling.
Novice Mid

* Writing may be difficult to understand even by those accustomed to non-heritage speakers.
