Abstract

10%
A summary of the totality of the literature review covering major points and conclusions. Between 150-250 words

Poor

Too short/long. Lacks flow - doens't match the review. Content unrelated or not accurate relevant to the essay. Poorly written with lack of displayed understanding of the purpose of an abstract.
Good

In bounds of the confines (150-250 words). Accurately summarizes most major points but leaves some missing. Flow of the abstract doesn't match the flow of the essay in its entirety but rather in a chaotic manner.
Exemplary

Is appropriate length. Flow matches the review itself covering the major points and conclusions of the essay including rationale, problem statement, major concepts and conclusions, and a statement for further research.
Problem Statement

10%
Specific area of concern within the identified area of interest. Clear and concise statement about what needs to be better understood and why this review is necessary. Refer to: http://libguides.usc.edu/writingguide/introduction/researchproblem for more information.

Poor

Neither implicit nor explicit reference is made to the topic or purpose of the essay. It is unclear the direction or nature of the review leading into the body of the review
Good

Readers are aware of the overall problem, challenge, or topic of the article, however, it feels disconnected to the overall introduction.
Exemplary

The topic is introduced, and groundwork is laid as to the direction of the article. Clear and directed statement of the problem so the reader has an understanding of what is upcoming in the body.
BODY
50 % A review, critique, and synthesis of the existing body of literature in a given content area. Explores the major themes, outcomes, ideas, and conclusions found by researching the topic. Gives the reader a range of knowledge on the content area with clear/concise writing narrowing from broad concept to narrow and specific summaries, concepts, and problems. Leads the reader to a logical conclusion about why the writer is going to conduct future research in this area and what the research will be.

Flow of the review

15%

Poor

The literature review appears to have no direction, with subtopics appearing disjointed.
Good

There is a basic flow from one section to the next, but not all sections or paragraphs follow in a natural or logical order. Concepts from articles are loosely tied but not fully cohesive.
Exemplary

The literature review goes from general ideas to specific conclusions. Transitions tie sections together, as well as adjacent paragraphs. Concepts and ideas from articles are cohesive and connect logically.
Coverage of content

20%

Poor

Major research contributors are missing. Too much focus on one or two research articles. Many ideas are disconnected or superfluous to the overall content area and problem statement
Good

A wide range of sources have been identified and used. Sources are fairly reported on. Some articles/ideas feel disconnected from the overall content area.
Exemplary

The appropriate content in consideration is covered in depth without being redundant. Sources are cited when specific statements are made. Significance to the content area is unquestionable.
Clear writing

15%

Poor

It is hard to know what the writer is trying to express. Writing is convoluted. Misspelled words, incorrect grammar, and improper punctuation are evident. Clearly not proofread and edited in a systematic way.
Good

Writing is generally clear, but unnecessary words are occasionally used. Meaning is sometimes hidden. Paragraph or sentence structure is too repetitive. Few spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors are made.
Exemplary

Writing is crisp, clear, and succinct. The writer incorporates the active voice when appropriate and supports ideas with examples. No spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors are made.
