Historical Fiction Essay
Historical Fiction Essay
Write about a Patriot soldier heading home after the war ended and tells his family about what led to victory. Use the following words accurately within the essay: seige, Valley Forge, privateer, Patriot, General Cornwallis, loyalist, Yorktown, Treaty of Paris, Continental Army, George Washington, optional: "I have not yet begun to fight." This essay must be at least three (3) paragraphs. Each paragraph must be at least 5 to 8 sentences. This is due Mon. January 14th and will count as a Chapt. 6 The American Revolution Test grade. You are to use the text, your notes, and anything we did in class to ensure that you have the correct information in your essay. You have progressed so much in your writing. Use your imagination and your knowledge of US History and make this essay count. I am expecting to read a fact-filled and well-written essay from each of you. You are encouraged to do it on Microsoft Word, but you may write it neatly as well.

Historical Fiction Essay
Part 1

Making Progress - C

Not Yet - D

Organization
Exemplary - A
My writing has a
strong lead, a
developed middle,
and a satisfying
ending, all in an
order that makes
sense, flows, and
hangs together.
Proficient - B
I have either a
strong lead,
developed middle or
satisfying ending
but not all three.
Making Progress - C
I have a beginning,
middle and end in
logical order but
without finesse.
Not Yet - D
My organization is
rough but workable.
My writing may be slow and then jump ahead quickly; my ending may stop suddenly,it is probably confusing
to a reader.
Ideas and Content
Exemplary - A
My paper brings the
time & place my
character lived
alive; vividly
describes her/his
experiences and
values; refers to
relevant, historically
accurate details.
Proficient - B
My paper reveals
the time and place
my character lived;
describes an event in
her/his life; most or
all details are
historically
accurate.
Making Progress - C
The time & place
my character lived
is clear, but his/her
experiences are
more like a list than
a writing; some details may be historically
inaccurate.
Not Yet - D
The setting of my
story is indistinguishable, and
the characters’
experiences and/or
values are often
historically
inaccurate.
Voice and Tone
Exemplary - A
I use 1st person point of view. My
voice sounds like a
real person. My
paper has
personality & shows
how my character
thinks and feels.
Proficient - B
I sound like I am interested about the topic. My writing voice is appealing but may fade in and out.
Making Progress - C
My tone is ALRIGHT but my paper could
have been written
by anyone. I need
to reveal more
about how I think
and feel about the
topic to show my own personal voice.
Not Yet - D
My writing is weak. It
sounds like I have
not found my own
way to say things. I
used 2nd or 3rd
person so there may
be no hints of a real
person in it.
Word Choice
Exemplary - A
The words I use are
appealing but natural,
e.g., "wondered"
instead of "thought."
I use powerful verbs
& historically
accurate words and
phrases from the period.
Proficient - B
My paper has some
fine word choices
and generally good
language. However, some parts may show my usual form of writing.
Making Progress - C
The words I use are
acceptable but
ordinary. I should
try to use more
expressive words. Some words may be used incorrectly.
Not Yet - D
The same words
are repeated over
and over and over again. Some
words may be
confusing to a
reader.

spelling, or
punctuation mistakes.
Proficient - B
I have 4 or less grammar, capitals, spelling, or punctuation mistakes.
Making Progress - C
I have 5 or less grammar, capitals, spelling, or punctuation mistakes.
Not Yet - D
I have 6 or more grammar, capitals, spelling, or punctuation mistakes.
Speaking
Exemplary - A
I use expression while reading, project my voice loud and clear, and make eye contact with the audience 3 or more times.
Proficient - B
I use expression while reading, project my voice loud and clear, and make eye contact with the audience 2 times.
Making Progress - C
I try to use expression while reading, project my voice somewhat, and make eye contact once.
Not Yet - D
I attempt to use expression and be loud enough. However, no eye contact is present.
