I don't retell the main events of the text.	PARTIALLY Meets My comments show that I attempted most of the strategies. I partially retell the main events of the text.	MEETS My comments accomplish each of the reading strategies. Near the end of the text, I use bullets to "retell" the main ideas/events of the text.	EXCEEDS My comments show mastery of each of the reading strategies.
Margin Work My comments accomplish the following purposes: Defining unfamiliar words Paraphrasing a particularly challenging phrase or sentence Identifying the connotative meaning of a word	Does NOT Meet I circle a few words,and I may even define them, but the definitions don't seem to have helped me to understand the phrase or text.	PARTIALLY Meets I choose several words and define them, but I do not seem to be able to connect the meaning to the text.	MEETS I actively choose words that jump out to me. If I don't know them, I define them; if I know them, but am confused as to how they are used in this sentence, I use the context to help me put the text into my own words.	EXCEEDS I understand that the author chooses specific words with multiple layers of meaning and I can demonstrate how those meanings add depth to the text.
