Describe Characters and Setting 25 % How does the conflict in the story affect the characters decisions. (why they did what they did.)	Excellent/Advanced The most important characters are mentioned in the review and described. Relationships between characters are clear. Complete understanding and description of setting.	Acceptable The most important characters are mentioned and described. Relationships between characters may not be clear. Partial understanding and description of setting.	Needs Work Characters are mentioned. Description of characters is minimal and/or confusing. Mentions setting but no description.	Poor The review does not mention essential characters to the story. No elaboration if a main character is mentioned. No mention of the setting
Plot 30 %	Excellent/Advanced The plot description is clear and easy to follow, and demonstrates clear evidence that the book was carefully read and considered.	Acceptable The plot description is easy to follow, but a bit more information should have been given. The description lacks details, or lacks consideration.	Needs Work The plot description is overly complicated, overly simple. Events may also be disorganized. Little evidence is provided that the book was read.	Poor The plot description is minimal, or confusing due to disorganization. No evidence is provided that the student read the novel, or the student seems to have read only a summary of the novel.
Recommendation 25 %	Excellent/Advanced The review provides a clear recommendation statement with strong reasons/support. The book is recommended to specific types of readers.	Acceptable The review provides a clear recommendation statement but without sufficient support. It is assumed that every reader would feel the same about the book.	Needs Work The review provides a recommendation statement. However, it is general such as, "This is a good book."	Poor The review does not include a recommendation statement.
Length 20 % Essay should be 600-800 words.	Excellent/Advanced Essay is at least 600 words.	Acceptable Essay is 400-599 words.	Needs Work Essay is 200-399 words.	Poor Essay is less than 200 words.
