Terrarium / Ecosystem
Students will be building a terrarium and aquatic ecosystem using the guidelines given. The system will be monitored daily for 2-3 weeks. Students will also be create diagrams and explanatory paragraphs for the carbon, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide / oxygen cycles , as well as man's possible disruption of these cycles. A daily log/data will be kept on the growth and development of the ecosystem

Terrarium Construction

Poor

Terrarium is not at all viable due to its construction.
Fair

Terrarium is poorly composed - i.e. inadequate soil, missing components
Good

Contains at least 2 plants that are suited for their type of terrarium, proper layering of components.
Terrarium Maintenance

Poor

Terrarium is rarely checked. Little to no effort is made to remediate any problems.
Fair

Terrarium is checked sporadically. Adjustments are minimal / ineffective.
Good

Terrarium is checked at least 2x per week for water balance, mold, improper sunlight. Adjustments are made to remediate any problems.
Ecosystem Construction

Poor

Little to no attention to the construction steps results in an unviable ecosystem.
Fair

Omissions / careless mistakes are made during the ecosystem construction period.
Good

Ecosystem is constructed following guidelines - Tap water sits for 24 hrs, fist water is gradually adapted, etc.
Ecosystem Monitoring

Poor

Little to no monitoring is recorded.
Fair

Fish, plants, snails, and water quality are monitored sporadically and with little detail. Records are disorganized and / or incomplete.
Good

Fish, plants, snails, and water quality are monitored accurately daily. Journal entries or data charts are neat and organized in chronological order with data recorded in the same order for each entry.
Carbon Cycle

Poor

More than 2 substantial errors or omissions exist in the diagram / paragraph.
Fair

Diagram is incorrectly / incompletely labelled.
The explanatory paragraph contains minor errors / omissions.
Good

Diagram and explanatory paragraph of the carbon cycle are complete. All components of the diagram are labelled neatly. The explanation follows the carbon in the ecosystem throughout each step of the cycle.
Carbon Dioxide / Oxygen Cycle

Poor

More than 2 substantial errors or omissions exist in the diagram / paragraph.
Fair

Diagram is incorrectly / incompletely labelled.
The explanatory paragraph contains minor errors / omissions.
Good

Diagram and explanatory paragraph of the gas cycle are complete. All components of the diagram are labelled neatly. The explanation follows the gases in the ecosystem throughout each step of the cycle.
Nitrogen Cycle

Poor

More than 2 substantial errors or omissions exist in the diagram / paragraph.
Fair

Diagram is incorrectly / incompletely labelled.
The explanatory paragraph contains minor errors / omissions.
Good

Diagram and explanatory paragraph of the nitrogen cycle are complete. All components of the diagram are labelled neatly. The explanation follows the nitrogen in the ecosystem throughout each step of the cycle.
