Mini-Ecosystems
Students will create a miniature ecosystem that must contain all of the major elements of an ecosystem, including: habitat, plants, water source, decomposers, producers, and consumers. Projects may be in any-sized container that the student might chose, but must be easy to transport alone. Projects will be due April 15, and must include a 2 page, typed report. Ecosystem

Poor

More than 2 elements are missing from the student's ecosystem, or it is not present. Resources show clear signs of decay, no attempt has been made to keep fresh.
Fair

Ecosystem is present, but missing 1-2 elements (for example no decomposer, or no shelter for living organisms. Students have made an effort to change out resources that need to be changed.
Good

Ecosystem is complete. All living organisms have what is needed to survive (food, water, shelter, light, ect.), and there is evidence that care has been made to keep changeable sources (ie, water) clean and fresh for organisms.
Excellent

Ecosystem is complete, and fully self-sustaining. If left alone, all living things would be able to survive for an extended amount of time.
Neatness/ Clarity

Poor

Ecosystem presentation is not given or is not functional. Paper has more than 20 errors, or is unreadable.
Fair

Ecosystem presentation is messy, dirty, or unsustainable, (elements will not truly create a system). Paper has 10 - 20 errors, and/or is messy, untyped, or difficult to read.
Good

Ecosystem is clean and neat, though limited thought has been used in constructing. Student has kept all elements clean and working. Report is neat, with minimal errors( 5 - 10).
Excellent

Ecosystem shows real thought, all elements work well together and student has made a way to keep all elements clean and working. Paper is also neat, generally free of errors, and effort made to cite used info.
Paper

Poor

Paper is not present or illegible. Multiple pieces of the ecosystem are not explained, or information is inaccurate. Student cannot relate ideas covered to nature, as a whole. No discussion of how the ecosystem sustains itself.
Fair

Paper is present, but fails to identify one of the pieces of the ecosystem, or does not relate this to nature in a larger context. Information is present but inaccurate. No connection made to how ecosystem sustains itself.
Good

Paper identifies the roles of producer, consumer, and decomposer,( in nature), and how this relates to their ecosystem. Can make connections to how the ecosystem will sustain itself.
Excellent

Paper clearly identifies the roles of a producer, consumer, and decomposer, (in nature), and how the organisms in their ecosystem fit into these categories, as well as how resources and habitat influence these relationships (including a discussion of competition by organisms). Also explains how ecosystem will sustain itself.
