Family Totem Pole Project 
Students will assemble a totem pole using symbols that represent family members (including the student). The totem must be accompanied by paragraphs explaining choice of each animal, its characteristics, and the relationship to each family member.

The totem pole is creative; clearly every effort was made to do your best! Required information is included-ALL family members, in order; base-labeled as directed.
Good

The totem pole contains a few mistakes, but it meets the majority of the requirements; evidence of good effort shows in finished product.
Fair

The totem pole shows little understanding of the requirements, and/or contains errors. Lacks neatness/creativity.
Poor

The totem pole does not meet requirements and there are many errors. Demonstrates little neatness, quality, and/or creativity.
Family Paragraphs

Excellent

A paragraph for each family member is included. Each paragraph includes all necessary information-habitat, physical/behavioral characteristics of animal(s) chosen - AND the reason for choosing each animal for family members.
Good

A paragraph for almost every family member is included. Each of those paragraphs includes all or nearly all necessary information.
Fair

Most paragraphs are included; very few or none of those include the required information.
Poor

A paragraph was not included for each family member. Paragraphs did not include information required.
Mechanics

Excellent

Fifth grade writing conventions-spelling, grammar, punctuation, structure-were met: very few errors.
Good

Fifth grade writing conventions were used most of the time; only a few errors occur.
Fair

Fifth grade writing conventions were used rarely. Editing/revision practices do not appear to be used.
Poor

No visible evidence of fifth grade conventions for writing appear to be used.
