Gulliver's Travels Summer Reading 
The student will answer the provided rhetorical prompt, and complete a 3 page paper that thoroughly answers the chosen prompt. Textual evidence is a must, as well as following the MLA format.

Target

Student has thoroughly and completely answered the chosen prompt. A clear thesis is stated, defended, and focused through out . Uses a minimum of 4 citations, 1 from each section.
Acceptable

Prompt is answered but confusion, lack of clear defense, or lack of focus from thesis occurs. Paper is solid, but clarification or editing needed. Uses 3 citations from the novel, at least three separate sections.
Unacceptable

Prompt is not answered or selected prompt is not addressed. No clear thesis, defense of statement is shoddy or weak. Paper lacks depth or understanding. Uses 2 or less textual citations.
Textual Evidence

Target

To earn a target evaluation students pull directly from the text Evidence is aligned to the defense of their thesis. MLA format is correctly used with less than 3 errors.
Acceptable

Acceptable meets most requirements with vague connection or MLA errores. Evidence seems to be aligned to the defense of their thesis. MLA format is used but more than 4 errors occur in use.
Unacceptable

Vague or no connection to MLA. MLA format is not used or poorly so.Evidence has no connection to paper. Lack of any textual evidence.
Organization and Mechanics

Target

Paper is mechanically sound. Less than 3 grammatical errors (not including MLA) occur. Paper remains focused and on task through out, clearly following a line of explanation.
Acceptable

Paper is mechanically unsound. More than 3 grammatical errors (not including MLA) occur. Paper is unfocused and may wander through out, is difficult to follow explanation.
Unacceptable

Paper is in a rough draft stage, in need of editing. Grammatical errors abound (not including MLA), organization is weak or unapparent.
