Minimal background information is provided. Includes a thesis statement that does not clearly outline the main points of the essay.
Poor

There is no introduction present; the paper just begins. The thesis is weak or not identifiable.
Content & Development

Excellent

Each paragraph has a topic sentence. Content is comprehensive. Writer states and maintains a position, and authoritatively defends that position with precise and highly relevant evidence/ quotes.
Good

Topic sentence may be irrelevant to the thesis. Content is somewhat comprehensive. Writer states and maintains a position, and generally defends that position with specific, applicable evidence/ quotes.
