Ideas	Advanced Interesting, specific details are used to "show" what is going on in the story. Details help the reader visualize the action in the story.	Proficient Specific details are used to tell the story. One or two may help the reader visualize the story, but mostly the reader must read between the lines.	Basic Some details, but mostly you just give brief action without much detail.	Below Basic Details are missing. The story is not expanded on in any way.
Organization	Advanced The piece begins with a a setting and character description. The middle includes a defined problem and at least 3 events leading to the solution. The end is appropriate and clear. The problem is solved.	Proficient The beginning, middle and end are obvious and easy to follow. They appear in a logical order but still missing some components (character description, setting, problem, events, solutions).	Basic The beginning, middle and end are harder to identify because more than 3 componets are missing.	Below Basic The writing is unclear so that finding the beginning, middle and/or end is challenging.
Sentence Fluency	Advanced Beginnings of sentences are varied and there is a mix between shorter sentences and longer ones.	Proficient Most sentences follow the same pattern but there is some variety. There is a mix between shorter sentences and longer ones.	Basic Sentences begin the same. Sentences are shorter and are simple in nature.	Below Basic Run-ons and fragments are seen throughout the piece. Reading the sentences may be challenging.
Conventions	Advanced No errors or very few errors (0-4) in grammar, punctuation and/or spelling exist. Conclusion	Advanced The conclusion wraps things up and includes a takeaway.	Proficient The conslusion is ok. It is either missing either a takeaway or more details wrapping up the story.	Basic The conclusion is simple and basic. There is no takeaway and story ends abruptly.	Below Basic There is no conclusion.
