DNA replication stop motion animation
Students will reconstruct the processes of DNA replication. All steps in replication must be labeled correctly and identifiable. Software will be used to make a digital stop motion animation (similar to a digital flipbook). Students will use their foam kit and their own materials for the reconstruction.

Construction / Materials

Exceptional

Appropriate materials were selected and creatively modified in ways that made them even better. Student went above and beyond.
Skilled

Appropriate materials were selected and there was an attempt at creative modification to make them even better.
Proficient

Appropriate materials were selected and modified to create a model.
Developing

Some appropriate materials were selected but minimal effort was applied to create structure.
Inadequate

Inappropriate materials were selected and contributed to a product that performed poorly.
Quality of work

Exceptional

Great care taken in reconstruction process so that the structure is neat, attractive and follows the process accurately.
Skilled

Reconstruction was careful and accurate for the most part, but 1-2 details could have been refined for a more attractive product.
Proficient

Reconstruction accurately followed the process, but 3-4 details could have been refined for a more attractive product.
Developing

Reconstruction appears careless or haphazard. Many details need refinement for a strong or attractive product
Inadequate

Reconstruction appears almost non-existent. Student supplied a product that has no organization or evidence of the process.
Labeling and stages

Leading strand, Lagging strand, Okazaki fragments, parental strands, 3' and 5' ends, helicase, SSB, topoisomerase, primase, DNA Polymerase, DNA Ligase

Exceptional

Included all required stages of DNA replication. Labels were applied in correct places.
Skilled

Included most required aspects of DNA replication (1 label left out or not used properly). Can still see specific structures and general process.
Proficient

Included some of the required aspects of DNA replication (2-3 labels left out or not used properly). Can still see the general process.
Developing

Included very few required aspects of DNA replication (4-5 labels left out or not used properly). Few recognizable steps for DNA replication.
Inadequate

Included almost no required aspects of DNA replication (most labels left out or not used properly). Product presented makes it hard to recognize the steps of DNA replication.
Accuracy

Exceptional

All aspects of DNA replication are completed with no mistakes. Structure, nucleotide pairing, use of enzymes etc. are accurate.
Skilled

All aspects of DNA replication are completed with 1 mistake in structure and process, etc.
Proficient

All aspects of DNA replication are completed with 2-3 mistakes in structure and process, etc.
Developing

All aspects of DNA replication are completed with 4-5 mistakes in structure and process, etc.
Inadequate

All aspects of DNA replication are completed with more than 5 mistakes in structure and process, etc.
Presentation

Exceptional

Able to completely identity each step of DNA replication. Movie is smooth, attractive, and attention is paid to details.
Skilled

Able to completely identity each step of DNA replication. Movie is a bit blurry but attractive, some attention is paid to details.
Proficient

Some steps of DNA replication are hard to identify. Movie is blurry and unattractive with little attention paid to details.
Developing

Most steps of DNA replication are hard to identify. Movie is unclear, unattractive, and there is evidence of little effort.
Inadequate

Unable to accurately identify DNA replication. Movie shows no effort.
