The monologue lacks a beginning, middle and end. No shift in characters speech. Wording is random-unconnected and lacks logical progression.
Level 3
The monologue has a beginning, middle and end. The shift in the character's speech is emerging. Use of language is effective but more edits may be needed.
Level 4
The monologue has a clear beginning, middle and end. A clear shift occurs in the characters speech suggesting a change in motivation or tactic. Excellent use of language (economy of words).
Character's Voice
Level 2
Script's language rarely reflects character history. Speech patterns, slang and style are not utilized. Speech reads as a narrative and doesn't create world of the character.
Level 3
Script's language somewhat reflects character's background. Speech patters and stylings are occasionally utilized. The world of the character is emerging.
Level 4
Script's language clearly reflects character's history/status. Specific speech patterns, slang and style are utilized, creating world of character.
Imagery/Character Revelation
Level 2
The monologue employs little if any imagery to convey conflict or struggle. The imagery serves no purpose and doesn't enhance the speech.
Level 3
The monologue uses some imagery in conveying journey of character. Character elements revealed through imagery that were previously unknown.
Level 4
The monologue efficiently employs imagery to convey the struggle/conflict within the speech. The imagery/speech clearly reveals a character element previously unknown.
Vocal Elements
Level 2
Fails to communicate expressively. Doesn't utilize rate, pitch, tone or volume. Inaudible at times. A Talking Head.
Level 3
Communicates somewhat expressively. Use of rate, pitch, tone and volume utilized through most of the performance. Connection between voice and body emerging.
Level 4
Communicates expressively, enunciating words: varies rate, pitch, tone, volume of delivery effectively. Voice is connected to movement.
Stage Presence/Physical Engagement
Level 2
Movement lacks expression. Character not illuminated. Focus/Status non-existent. Lack of commitment/breaking character.
Level 3
Moves somewhat expressively, using some gestures, body movements and facial expressions. Focus and status periodically lost through performance.
Level 4
Moves expressively, using variety of gestures, body movements, facials to effectively illuminate character. Focus and status maintained throughout monologue.
