Ideas and Content

Poor

Did not have a clear idea of what to say. There was not a lot of information shared in diary entries and it is unclear if student knew much about the topic. Details are vague and it is a challenge for the reader to picture what life was like along the Oregon Trail.
Fair

Some really good ideas started but were not thoroughly developed or explained. Knowledge of topics discussed was displayed. Did not go into much detail about life along the trail.
Good

Focused, clear, specific. It keeps the reader’s attention. Knowledge about topic was demonstrated. Thoroughly explained daily events such as struggles and triumphs
Voice

Poor

No real character creation or development evident throughout entries. Some thoughts and emtions discussed, but overall it was more a statement of facts than an diary.
Fair

Personality creeps in and out of diary entries. What the pioneer thought and felt was not always conveyed. Writing is pleasant, but not desrciptive.
Good

Really individual and unique. By the end of the diary there was a clear sense of who this person was and how they viewed life along the Oregon Trail. Diary entries potray to the reader the emotions of the poineer.
Organization

Poor

The diary entries did not flow together leaving the reader confused as to what is happening with the pioneer. More than half of the major landmarks were not in correct geographcial order.
Fair

Some parts of the diary flowed really well, while others left the reader confused and lost. Most landmarks were placed in correct geographical order with only a few either missing or out of place.
Good

Clear! Easy for reader to follow along with the life of the poineer. Sequences of events made sense and progressed in a realistic way. Accurate geographical timeline as to major landmarks along the Oregon Trail.
Word Choice and Grammar

Poor

No vocabulary words discussed in class were used throughout the diary. Ten or more spelling and grammar errors.
Fair

Only one or two vocabulary words discussed in class were used throughout the diary. Less than nine grammar or spelling errors.
Good

Clear, descriptive writing. Used at least a few vocabulary words discussed in diary entries. Less than six grammar or spelling errors.
