Rubric Criteria
	Proficient 4 pts	Good 3 pts	Fair 2 pts	Poor 1 pts
Main/Topic Idea Sentence	Proficient Main/Topic idea sentence is clear, correctly placed, and is restated in the closing sentence.	Good Main/Topic idea sentence is either unclear or incorrectly placed, and is restated in the closing sentence.	Fair Main/Topic idea sentence is unclear and incorrectly placed, and is restated in the closing sentence.	Poor Main/Topic idea sentence is unclear and incorrectly placed, and is not restated in the closing sentence.
Supporting Detail Sentence	Proficient Paragraph(s) have three or more supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.	Good Paragraph(s) have two supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.	Fair Paragraph(s) have one supporting detail sentence that relate back to the main idea.	Poor Paragraph(s) have no supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.
Elaborating Detail Sentences	Proficient Each supporting detail sentence has three or more elaborating detail sentences.	Good Each supporting detail sentence has at least two elaborating detail sentences.	Fair Each supporting detail sentence has one elaborating detail sentence.	Poor Each supporting detail sentence has no elaborating detail sentence.
Legibility	Proficient Legible handwriting, typing, or printing.	Good Marginally legible handwriting, typing, or printing.	Fair Writing is not legible in places.	Poor Writing is not legible.
Mechanics and Grammar	Proficient Paragraph has no errors in punctuation, grammar, capitalization, and spelling.	Good Paragraph has one or two punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and/or spelling errors.	Fair Paragraph has three to five punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and/or spelling errors.	Poor Paragraph has six or more punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and/or spelling errors.
