Tone is focused, clear, and centered through the normal singing range. Extremes in range sometimes cause tone to be less controlled. Tone quality does not detract from the performance.
Superior

Tone is consistently focused, clear, and centered throughout the range of the voice.

Sings some simple songs mostly in tune and developing breath control for typical patterns.

Sings simple songs easily and manages some more complex tunes some of the time. Has adequate breath control

phrasing.
Superior

Singing the melody confidently and independently with proper breath control.
Diction

Poor

Pitch is uncertain and diction is not very clear. No clue as to what the student is singing. Possibly singing in a different language.
Average

Has difficulty with managing pitch control and rarely articulates the words and the text is not discernible.
Proficient

Matches pitch with few errors and sometimes articulate the words, but the text is often not discernible.
Excellent

Students articulate the words somewhat clearly and the text can be understood most of the time.
Superior

Student articulates clearly and the text of the music is understandable.
Rhythm

Poor

Tempo/rhythm are uncertain and irregular. The student got no rhythm.
Average

Some regularity in rhythm, The beat is usually erratic and rhythms are seldom accurate, detracting significantly from the overall performance.
Proficient

Maintains consistent rhythm. Erratic beat and frequent or repeated duration errors. Rhythm problems occasionally detract from the overall performance.
Excellent

Effective rhythm and independent punctuation. Mostly accurate rhythm. Few duration errors, but these do not detract from the overall performance.
Superior

The beat is secure and the rhythms are accurate for the music being sung
Dynamics

Poor

Dynamic level is often too loud, overpowering
others, or so soft that the song cannot be heard.
Average

Dynamic level varies inconsistently, but is developing towards appropriate levels
Proficient

Dynamics are consistent and generally appropriate and balanced within the ensemble
Excellent

Dynamics are appropriate for different aspects of the song. Reflects the notation and/or the director’s intent.
Superior

Sing with appropriate dynamics. Fully aware of the conductor's hand sign for dynamics and change as it needed.
Expression

Poor

Monotonic or
inappropriate
expression mars
performance.Expression and style is comparable to a dead rodent.
Average

Expression is sometimes appropriate, but may be inconsistent. Rarely demonstrated expression and style. Just sings the notes.
Proficient

Expression is generally appropriate to the song being sung. Sometimes performs with nuance and style that is indicated in the score or which is suggested by the instructor or peer.
Excellent

Typically performs with nuance, appropriate depth and emotional range and style that is indicated in the score.
Superior

Performs with a creative nuance and style in response to the score and limited coaching. Follows melodic direction.
Focus

Poor

Does not show sensitivity to conductors change and ignores directions
Average

Occasionally hits appropriate change or responds sometimes to direction given by the conductor.
Proficient

Developing sensitivity to changes and responds to direction given by the conductor.
Excellent

Has a confident command of changes and responds sensitively to direction given by the conductor.
Superior

Has self confidence and responds to accurately for all direction given by the conductor
