Shakespeare Sonnet 
Students will create a presentation etc. in which they discuss what sonnet is, the types, and examples of each. They will then create a how to guide in which they will choose a sonnet to practice basic analysis skills, including marking the meter, feet, translating it into your own words, and label ingfigurative language!

Excellent

Paraphrase is clear and intelligible, and stays close to structure of the original sonnet. There are no misinterpretations, incorrect translations, or over-modernization of Shakespeare's ideas.
Good

Student misunderstands and incorrectly paraphrases 1-2 lines, but is able to paraphrase in structure without over-modernizing the language.
Fair

There are more than two misinterpretations that affect the meaning of the sonnet overall. Language used in the paraphrase is too casual.
Poor

Extremely convoluted or incomplete paraphrase.
Break down

Excellent

Students properly identify the stressed and unstressed syllables (meter) and correctly mark it into feet
Good

Students mark most of the meter and feet correctly with a few minor mistakes
Fair

Students mark either feet or meter but not both or make several errors
Poor

Students do no mark feet or meter or do it entirely incorrectly.
Figurative Langauge

Excellent

All assigned figures of sound (alliteration, assonance, consonance and onomatopoeia) are marked clearly and labeled
Good

Assigned figures of speech are marked clearly, but some lines have not been considered.

Some figures of speech are marked, but major elements are missed, indicating a need to look more deeply at the text.

Figures are not marked as indicated in key and/or there is no key. A majority of elements are missed.

Meter types (measurements)
Foot types (measurements)
Three parts of a sonnet-the argument, the volta (turn), and conclusion-this is usually the couplet which you may also want to explain
Two examples of EACH TYPE that are NOT in the packet given in class!
Good

Students include MOST of the information required, but are missing 1-2 parts or incorrectly or confusingly identify or explain these parts
Fair

Students include some of the information required, but are missing 3-4 parts or incorrectly or confusingly identify or explain these parts
Poor

Students are missing several pieces of information or do not have them in a way that is easy to understand
Creativity/Clearity

Excellent

Students presentation is creative including things like pictures, transitions, eye catching elements, etc. and is clear, easy to read, definitions and examples are easy to understand and clearly labeled and examples are not common
Good

Student presentation is clear and easy to understand but lacks some creative elements (still has a few pictures, transitions, etc.)
Fair

Student presentation includes some creative elements but is difficult to understand, read, etc. or is confusing
Poor

Student presentation has no creative elements, is difficult to understand, and is not easy to read or understand.
