This rubric can be used to help assess a student on their understanding of the fictional story elements.

Story Elements Rubric

Characters Who is the story about?	1 Student cannot name a character by name or give any details about them.	2 Student can identify a character by name, and can give some details about the character.	3 Student can identify all characters by name and can give specific details about them.
Setting Where and when a story takes place.	1 Student cannot identify where the story takes place.	2 Student can identify where the story takes place, but cannot give any details about it.	3 Student can identify where the story takes place and can give two or more details about it.
Conflict (problem) What problem does the character have in the story?	1 Student cannot identify any problem in the story.	2 Student can identify one minor problem in the story.	3 Student can identify the major problem in the story.
Resolution (fixes the problem) How does the character solve the problem?	1 Student cannot identify any resolution in the story.	2 Student can identify the resolution but provide no details.	3 Student can identify the resolution and provide details.
Events (plot)	1 Student cannot identify any events in the story.	2 Student can identify one event that happened in the story.	3 Student can identify the events that happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story.
