Independent Novel Chapter Summary Novels Students will read segmented independent novel assignments and complete a 5-7 sentence summary for each segement. They will include topic sentences and transitions ( in the case of 2 paragraphs) to obtain a better understanding of how to synthesize character and plot development and to write a great summary . Novel Summaries
	Excellent 5 pts	Good 4 pts	Needs Improvement 3 pts
Summary Students write a summary for the chapter they have read. They will list the Chapter.	Excellent Student response has summarized novel segment using 1-2 paragraphs (5-7 sentences each). Student has effectively included topic sentences and transition sentences (in teh case of 2 paragraphs).	Good Student response has summarized the segment with appropriate number of sentences, and somewhat implements topic sentences and transisitons ( in the case of 2 paragraphs).	Needs Improvement Student response has summarized segment, but contains too much information andlacks true topic sentences and transitions ( in the case of 2 paragraphs)
Plot/Character Students examine discssion of character and plot developments	Excellent Student has effectively referenced characters and plot placement/ development	Good Student has somewhat referenced characters and plot placement/ development	Needs Improvement Student has not referenced characters or plot placement/ development adequately
Language and Conventions Students use appropriate grammar, capitalization and spelling	Excellent Student uses correct grammar, punctuation and uppercase letters correctly in response. Student spells all words correctly.	Good Student uses correct grammar,punctuation and uppercase letters correctly most of the time. Student spells most words correctly. (Fewer than 3 mistakes)	Needs Improvement Student does not use correct grammar, punctuation or uppercase letters frequently. Student does not spell many words correctly. (greater than 4 mistakes)
