Preview, Question, Predict I turn headings, subheadings, and captions into questions. I scan the text, think, and connect questions to my background knowledge. I predict answers.	Needs Work I did not write any questions next to headings, subheadings, or illustrations.	Satisfactory I wrote questions next to some headings, subheadings, or illustrations, but I haven't been consistent. There's no evidence that I connected the key topics to my background knowledge.	Very Good! My questions based on headings are spaced evenly throughout the text. Personal notes show that I'm making connections between the new material and what I already know.
Find Answers I highlight & paraphrase key words & phrases that answer the questions I asked.	Needs Work Nothing is highlighted or everything is highlighted. My comments accomplish each of the reading strategies. Near the end of the text, I use bullets to "retell" the main ideas of the text.
Noting Patterns Patterns of similarity, contrast and anomalies are marked. I note the following thought patterns: list/addition, time, illustration, definition, compare/contrast, cause/effect, and/or classification.	Needs Work I have no comments describing the relationships among paragraphs and sections of the text.	Satisfactory My comments show that I am just beginning to identify the structure of the reading passage.	Very Good!
