Characters should be mentioned in the retell if not ask, "who were the characters in the story?"

Very Little Comprehension

Refers to 1 or 2 characters or topics using pronouns (he, she, it, they)
Some Comprehension

Refers to 1 or 2 characters or topics by generic name or label (boy, girl, dog, mom)
Adequate Comprehension

Refers to many characters or topics by name in text (Ben, Giant, Monkey, Otter)
Very Good Comprehension

Refers to all characters or topics by specific name (Old Ben Bailey, green turtle, Sammy Sosa)
Setting

"Where did the story take place?/ Where were they in the story?"

Very Little Comprehension

Able to tell setting, when given 2 choices.
Some Comprehension

Able to tell setting when given 3 choices.
Adequate Comprehension

Student is able to verbalize the setting without options, but adult prompt (such as referencing a picture in the book).
Very Good Comprehension

Student is able to verbalize the setting of the story independently.
Retelling: Sequencing Events

"Start at the beginning and tell me what happened in the story?" (student can use book to reference)

Very Little Comprehension

Retells 1 event. (limited retelling)
Some Comprehension

Retells at least 2 events, events may be out of order. (partial retelling)
Adequate Comprehension

Retells most of the events, in mostly in sequence.

Verbally retells all the important events in the correct sequence.
