Lead

Excellent

I wrote a beginning in which I not only set the plot or story in motion, but also hinted a the larger meaning the story would convey.
Good

I wrote a beginning in which I not only showed what was happening and where, but also gave some clues to what would later become a problem for the main character.
Fair

Provided little more than the setting.
Need Improvement

I jumped into the story with very little information. Story was unclear from the start. The reader became confused.
Overall

Excellent

I wrote a story that had tension, resolution, and realistic characters that conveyed an event or taught a lesson that could have really happened.
Good

I wrote a story of an important moment. It read like a real event, even though it is only fiction.
Fair

I wrote a story. Parts of the story were not realistic. This was obviously made up.
Need Improvement

I wrote a bunch of words. Most of them did not flow into good sentences. The sentences did not flow into a story.
Craft: Character

Excellent

I developed character traits and emotions through what characters said and did. I developed some relationships among characters to show why they acted and spoke as they did. I told the internal as well as the external story.
Good

I showed WHY characters did what they did by including their thinking and their responses to what happened.
Fair

My characters had dialogue.
Need Improvement

My characters were flat without dialogue or feelings.
Craft: Language

Excellent

I wove together precise descriptions, figurative language, and was imaginative and the language used is accurate. I did not use the easiest type of figurative language, I went outside my comfort area and took a risk.
Good

I used figurative language, but it could have been more imaginative. It may have been routine. I could have taken more of a risk.
Fair

The figurative language used was acceptable, but ordinary. The wording is border line and sounds a bit made up.
Need Improvement

No figurative language was used. The conversations were boring.
Elaboration

Excellent

I developed realistic characters, and developed the details, action, dialogue, and internal thinking that contributed to the deeper meaning of the story.
Good

I developed characters, setting, and plot throughout my story, especially the heart of the story. To do this I used a blend of description, action, dialogue, and thinking.
Fair

I had characters who spoke and acted, but I did not reveal their thinking.
Need Improvement

My story was missing main characters who carry the story.
Ending

Excellent

I wrote an ending that connected to what the story was really about.
Good

I wrote an ending that connected to the main part of the story. The character said, did, or realized something at the end that come from what happened in the story.
Fair

I resolved my main problem in the end of the story, but no lessons were learned or revealed.
Need Improvement

The story ended.
Organization

Excellent

I used paragraphs purposefully, perhaps to show time or setting changes, new parts of the story or to create suspense for readers. I created a sequence of events that was clear.
Good

I used paragraphs to separate different parts of time of the story and to show when a new character was speaking. Some parts of the story were longer and more developed than others.
Fair

I divided my story into large sections; a beginning, middle, and end.
Need Improvement

I did not have the story divided into sections or paragraphs. It was just one large section of writing.
Conventions and Editing

Excellent

I used what I knew about word families and spelling rules to help me spell and edit. I used the dictionary and spell check when needed. I made fewer than 3 errors.
Good

I made some errors, perhaps by taking risks and using interesting words or sentences. There are 4-8 grammatical, punctuation, or spelling errors.
Fair

There are 9-12 grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors.
Need Improvement

There are more than 12 grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors.
Class time/Writing Process

Excellent

Class time was used wisely. I devoted a lot of time and effort to the process (prewriting, draft, reviewing, and editing). I worked hard to make the story wonderful.
Good

I devoted sufficient time and effort to the process (prewriting, draft, reviewing, and editing). Worked and got the job done. Individual work was focused and on task most of the time.
Fair

Class time was not used efficiently for this assignment, frequent redirection was needed. I devoted some time and effort into the writing process, but not very thorough. Did enough to get by.
Need Improvement

I rushed through this story to get it over.
