Evidence & Reasoning

In-Progress

Does not use sufficient or appropriate evidence and reasoning to support claims; comments are illogical and don't make any attempt to connect concepts; little or no account taken of previous comments
Basic

Uses evidence and reasoning to support claim, but it may be faulty or not well thought out; comments takes larger details into account but may not flow logically in conversation.
Proficient

Uses evidence and reasoning to support claim, but misses some of the finer details; comments are logical but not connected; ideas interesting enough that others respond to them.
Advanced

Uses appropriate and sufficient scientific data as evidence to support claim; clearly explains why the data counts as evidence by applying relevant scientific principles;
makes interesting connections between ideas in attempt to resolve contradictory ideas; considers others’ viewpoints, avoids bad logic.
Conduct

In-Progress

Extremely reluctant and/or off-topic; takes advantage of minor distractions; speaks to individuals rather than ideas; does not use notes or reference resources.
Basic

Participates, though only with prompting; attempts to make some connections between science concepts; may make insightful comments but does not contribute to the progress of the conversation; scarcely refers to notes or reference resources.
Proficient

Speaks voluntarily; makes connections between science concepts but may be impatient with confusing ideas; comments, but does not necessarily encourage others to participate; may tend to address only the teacher.
Advanced

Demonstrates respect for the class and content being discussed; has patience with different levels of complexity; asks others for clarification; brings others into the conversation; speaks to all of the participants; avoids talking too much.
Listening

In-Progress

Appears uninvolved in the seminar; comments display complete misinterpretation of questions or comments of other participants.
Basic

May have to have questions or confusions repeated due to inattention; takes few notes during the seminar in response to ideas and comments.
Proficient

Generally pays attention and responds thoughtfully to ideas and questions of other participants; absorption in own ideas may distract the participant from the connections being made by others.
Advanced

Pays attention to details; writes down questions and connections; responses take into account all points; demonstrates that he/she has read the materials; points out faulty logic respectfully.
