Persuasive Element	Excellent - All Persuasive techniques are included (facts, quotation and supported opinions) - Position is clearly stated and consistently maintained.	Average - Two persuasive techniques are included. - Position is stated but not maintained consistently throughout the essay.	Below Average Statement of position cannot be determined. Paper reads like an informational essay. May use "I think" statements.
Content & Development	Excellent Content is comprehensive, accurate. Major points are stated clearly and are well supported with good details. Content and purpose of the writing are clear.	Average Content is somewhat comprehensive and/or persuasive. Major points are addressed, and somewhat supported. Content is somewhat clear.	Below Average Content is incomplete. Major points are not clear and /or persuasive. Lack of persuasive appeals.
Organization	Excellent Paper is organized and transitions smoothly. Ideas are stated in order and structured.	Average Paper is somewhat organized and some transitions work well. Ideas are mostly in order and structured.	Below Average Paper is not organized and there are no transitions. Ideas are scattered throughout the paper in no order or structure.
Conclusion	Excellent The conclusion is strong and leaves the reader understanding the author's position.	Average The conclusion is recognizable. The author's position is restated.	Below Average The paper does not end with author's position; therefore the conclusion does not give an ending to the essay.
Grammar	Excellent Author follows rules of grammar, so the essay is easy to read.	Average Author makes 1-3 errors in grammar that distract the reader from the content, but the essay is still easy to read.	Below Average Author makes more than 4 errors in grammar that distract the reader from the content and interrupts the flow of the essay.
