Topic Students wil be given a writing promp. They will be expected to stay on topic during journal writing.	Advanced The writing has 2 or more paragraphs that are on topic.	Proficient The writing has at least 1 paragraph that relate to the topic.	Basic The student has made an attempt to write on topic. At least 4 sentences are on topic	Below Basic The students have 3 or less sentences on topic with the writing prompt.
Critical Thinking Does the student's responses demonstrate critical thought about the text? Are the reading strategies included?	Advanced The student's responses demonstrate superior critical thought about the text. Student response has at least three ideas present.	Proficient The student's responses demonstrate great critical thought about the text. Student response has at least two ideas present.	Basic The student's responses demonstrate critical thought about the text. Student response has one idea present.	Below Basic The student's responses do not demonstrate critical thought about the text. Student response is a retell with no ideas about the book.
Use of Examples Does the student's response demonstrate the use of supporting examples.	Advanced Student response has several examples which support the ideas stated.	Proficient Student response has at least two examples to support the idea stated.	Basic Student response has at least one example to support the idea stated.	Below Basic Student response does not have any examples to support their ideas.
