Short Story Writing

This rubric assesses students' proficiency in writing a short story based on the topic of their choosing. Students final draft should be typed in Times New Roman, 12 font, double spaced. Length: 2-3 pages.

Introduction	Poor Presents introduction unsuccessfully, does not grab the reader's attention or smoothly lead to the beginning of the story.	Sufficient Presents introduction reasonably well so that the reader's attention is grabbed, but the introduction does not tie in very well to the theme of the story.	Good Presents introduction somewhat successfully so that the reader's attention is grabbed in a way that entices the reader, but does not smoothly lead to the beginning of the story.	Very Good Presents introduction successfully so that the reader's attention is grabbed in a way that entices the reader & smoothly leads to the beginning of the story.
Plot	Poor Presents no logical order to the story.	Sufficient Presents a confusing sequence of events, not a clear plot line.	Good Presents a sequence of events, but there may be a part or two of the story where the reader gets confused.	Very Good Presents events that create a clear narrative.
Characterization	Poor Does not go in-depth with description; does not cover any aspects of character.	Sufficient Includes some description; covers some aspects of character but leaves huge holes in developing a clear and understandable character.	Good Goes in-depth with description; covers all aspects of character although there may be times where the reader does not understand the character's motives or demeanor.	Very Good Successfully goes in-depth with description; clearly covers all aspects of character.
Point of View	Poor Uses an inconsistent point of view and the reader is easily confused about who is narrating the story.	Sufficient Contains inconsistent points of view that flip flop back and forth within the story.	Good Told from a specific point of view with some interruptions and changes to who is narrating the story.	Very Good Writes from a consistent point of view.
Grammar	Poor There are many errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.	Sufficient There are some errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.	Good There are few errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.	Very Good There are little, if any, errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Language: Originality	Poor Uses uninspired word choices and never 'shows,' and only tells the reader.	Sufficient Uses cliches and unoriginal expressions and barely 'shows,' the reader and mostly tells.	Good Uses some interesting and fresh word choices with some use of showing descriptions and occasionally 'tells' the reader.	Very Good Uses a variety of word choices and tones to reveal story’s setting and characters with lots of good 'showing' descriptions.
