Introduction	Incomplete Does not state the essay question/your plan for the essay and/or jumps right to the body of the essay.	Average Does state the essay question/your plan for the essay, but is very weak and leaves the reader confused about the topic and your position on the topic.	Exceptional Does state the essay question/your plan for the essay clearly and strongly, so that the reader is not confused about the topic and your position on the topic
Support: Development	Incomplete -Content is incomplete. -Major points are not clear and/or persuasive. -No reference to or use of the readings.	Average -Content is not comprehensive and/or persuasive. -Major points are addressed, but not well supported by the readings. -Content is inconsistent with regard to purpose and clarity of thought.	Exceptional -Content is thorough, accurate, persuasive and relates to a specific purpose. -Answers every part of the essay question. -Major points are specific, stated clearly, and are well-supported by the readings. -Course concepts are focused with clear and succinct writing.
Conclusion	Incomplete -No concluding paragraph; essay ends abruptly.	Average -Weak concluding paragraph; does not summarize or restate the thesis clearly.	Exceptional -Strong concluding paragraph. Summarizes and restates the thesis in an interesting way that captures the reader's attention.
Organization	Incomplete -Almost no organization; no logical progression of ideas; no use of transitions between paragraphs.
