Introduction 20 pts	Excellent Extremely well-developed introduction. It engages the reader and creates interest. Contains detailed background information.	Good Introduction creates interest and is fairly well developed. Contains some background information and detail.	Fair Introduction adequately explains the background, but may lack detail and creativity.	Poor Background details are a random collection of information, or unclear, or not related to topic. Introduction boring and uninteresting.
Main points 20 pts	Excellent Action/points in story is cleverly developed with colorful and lively description. There is a clear and consistent point of view used throughout the story.	Good Well developed main points directly related to action or point of the story. Detail is descriptive and interesting. There is a clear point of view.	Fair There are clear points, but they lack detail. Points/action not very interesting.	Poor Details are either uninteresting or lacking. The narrator is undeveloped and tells rather than shows, the story.
Organization/structure 20 pts	Excellent Logical progression of ideas with a clear structure that enhances the story. Transitions links the sentences and paragraphs and they are present throughout essay.	Good Logical progression of ideas. Transitions are present equally throughout essay.	Fair Organization is clear. Transitions are present.	Poor Organization is not clear and make it hard for reader to follow. Transitions are not present.
Mechanics 20 pts	Excellent Writing is smooth, skillful, and coherent. Sentences are strong and expressive with varied structure. Word choice is consistent and well chosen.	Good Writing is clear and sentences have varied structure. Word choice is consistent.	Fair Writing is clear, but sentences may lack variety. Word choice is appropriate.	Poor Writing is confusing, hard to follow. Contains fragments and/or run-on sentences. Inappropriate word.
Conventions 20 pts	Excellent No errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, or capitalization.	Good Punctuation, spelling, grammar, and capitalization are generally correct with few errors.	Fair A few errors in punctuation, grammar, spelling, and capitalization.	Poor Distracting errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.
