Writer uses several newly acquired on topic vocabulary words and appropriately uses previously learned vocabulary.
Intermediate Low

Vocabulary is adequate to express past tense needs.
And stays on topic.
Novice High

Writer expresses vocabulary only within the context in which the language was learned, relying mainly on practiced material. Due to inadequate vocabulary and/or grammar, writing may only partially communicate the intentions of the writer.
Novice Mid

Writer reproduces from memory a modest number of words and phrases in context.
Writer frequently uses lists or phrases instead of complete sentences.
Writer occasionally uses English when he/she does not know the word/phrase.
Technical Skills

Writers show evidence of control of basic sentence structure and verb forms.
At times I use compound and/or complex sentences.
Writer uses transitional words appropriately.

Writer uses very few or no transitional words.

Intermediate Mid

Writer writes an appropriate series of events using at least 10 preterite verbs when appropriate and uses a verb no more than two times in two different forms. The writer includes at least three different forms correctly within the writing (yo, tú, él, ella, ud. nosotros, ellos /ellas/uds.) Writer may include other tenses as appropriate, but does identify 10 correctly used preterite verbs in their past tense narrative with a series of events and completed actions focus.
Intermediate Low

Writer writes an on topic series of events using at least 8-9 preterite verbs when appropriate and uses a verb no more than two times in two different forms. The writer includes at least three different forms correctly within the writing (yo, tú, él, ella, ud. nosotros, ellos /ellas/uds.) Writer may include other tenses as appropriate, but correctly identifies 7-9 correctly used preterite verbs in their past tense narrative with a series of events and completed actions focus.
Novice High

Writer writes an on topic series of events using correctly at least 5-7 preterite verbs. Writer may use the same verb more than 2 times in various different forms. OR
The writer includes 2 rather than 3 or more different forms in the preterite tense within the writing. Writer correctly identifies at least 4 correctly used preterite verbs in their past tense narrative with a series of events and completed actions focus.
Novice Mid

Writer includes more present than preterite tense and/or consistently does not have the correct subject verb agreement.

Writer has multiple errors is subject verb agreement.

Writer may use the same verb more than three times in various different forms.

Writer does NOT identify preterite verbs in their writing, or most of the words the student highlights are not verbs.
Detail, elaboration, examples

Intermediate Mid

Writer strings together sentences using transition words and appropriate and paragraph level discourse.
Writer adds detail to the sentences as appropriate to improve flow of the narrative.
Intermediate Low

Writer writes complete sentences that stay on topic and demonstrate a series of events, BUT writing lacks detail, examples and/or elaboration.
Novice High

Writing is focused on common elements of daily life.
Writer likely re-combines learned vocabulary and structures to create simple sentences.
Writing lacks flow. Few details are present.
Novice Mid

Writer does not elaborate, provide examples, or detail. Sentences appear like a simple list or actions.
Comprehensibility
5 pts

Intermediate Mid

Writing can be understood readily by natives used to the writing of non-natives.
Intermediate Low

Writing is understood by natives used to the writing of non-natives, although additional effort may be required.
Novice High

Writing is often comprehensible to natives used to the writing of non-natives, but gaps in comprehension may occur.
Novice Mid

Writing may be difficult to understand even by those accustomed to non-native writers.
