Content does not meet minimum standards. Essay is very basic and does not provide the necessary detail needed. The quotes used do not add to the overall voice of the essay.
Good

Content meets minimum standards for the assignment. The student makes minimal/obvious connections with the text that are good, but do not make it excellent. Use of quotes adds to the overall quality of the essay, but it does not take it to the advanced level in understanding the material.
Outstanding

Content clearly covers topic and adds in another level to the assignment. Student shows significant understanding of the text through use of quotes and concrete illustrations. The student used quotes to enhance his/her voice and opinion of the novel based on the question being answered.
