Exceeds Standard

Focused Thesis Statement that uses creative language and sentence structure, introduces the topic, and states supporting details.
Meets standard

Introduction clearly states the main topic. Uses basic language and states supporting details.
Approaches standard

Introduction is somewhat clear, uses basic language and does not state supporting details.
Unacceptable

No introduction.
Body Paragraphs

Exceeds Standard

Contains explanation that demonstrates mastery and depth of understanding.
Meets standard

Contains explanation that logically supports the details.
Approaches standard

Contains explanation that is weak, not complete, or doesn't make sense.
Unacceptable

Contain explanation that is off topic or doesn't make sense.
Conclusion (Organization)

Exceeds Standard

The conclusion makes sense and provides a clear answer to the question, "So what?"
Meets standard

The conclusion is logical and adequately answers the question, "So what?"
Approaches standard

The conclusion is logical but does not answer the question, "So what?"
Unacceptable

Conclusion is illogical or does not exist.
Length

Exceeds Standard

Five paragraphs or more of at least five sentences each.
Meets standard

1 paragraph or 1 sentence short.
Approaches standard

2 paragraphs short. Short paragraphs.
Unacceptable

2 or fewer paragraphs total, regardless of length.
Mechanics (Grammar and Spelling)

Exceeds Standard

The essay contains 0-3 errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization or punctuation.
Meets standard

The essay contains 4-6 errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization or punctuation.
Approaches standard

The essay contains 5-7 errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization or punctuation.
Unacceptable

The essay contains 8 or more errors or is unreadable for any reason.
