Plot

Beginning, Middle and End

Level 1

The writing is unclear. There is no beginning, middle and end in the story. There are no transition words. (For example: one day, later, finally, etc.)
Level 2

The beginning, middle and end are hard to find in the story. One or more may be missing. There are minimal transition words. (For example: one day, later, finally, etc.)
Level 3

There is a beginning, middle and end in the story. They appear in a logical order and include the use of some transition words. (For example: one day, later, finally, etc.)
Level 4

The story captures the reader's attention with an interesting beginning. The middle is logical and the end is appropriate and clear. Strong story transition words support the flow of the writing and help the reader know the time span of the story. (For example: once, meanwhile, not long after, etc.)
Characters and Setting

Level 1

The story does not have any details about the main character(s) or the setting. The reader can not visualize where the story takes place.
Level 2

The story has minimal details about the main character(s). There are few details about the setting to help the reader visualize where the story takes place.

The story has some details of the main character(s). The setting of the story is somewhat clear. The reader can visualize most of where the story takes place.

The story has well developed main characters. The setting of the story is clear. The reader can visualize where the story is taking place.

Word Choice

Level 1

The words used in the story were limited. No adjectives or adverbs were used in the story.
