Structure and organization

91-100

The piece of text shows a clear structure: introduction, which begins with a hook or a lead that captures the reader's attention. The middle is logical and the end is appropriate and clear. Transition words are used to support the flow of the writing.
81-90

The piece of text shows a beginning, a middle and and end are obvious and easy to follow; however, there is not a clear catching idea. They appear in a logical order and include the use of transition words.
75-80

The piece of text hardly shows a clear beginning, middle and ending. The text uses some transition words to link ideas.
10-74

The piece of text is unclear so that finding the beginning, middle and/or end is challenging.
Development of ideas

91-100

The piece of text shows specific details, which are used to support the main idea. The student Includes details that are unique or surprising to the reader.
81-90

The piece of text shows Specific details are used to support the main idea; however, one or two may be unique or surprising but most are predictable. Details mostly stick to the main idea, but there may be one or two that stray.
75-80

The piece of text's beginning, middle and end are harder to identify and one or more may be missing. Some details stick to the main idea, but most are vague. Nothing unusual is revealed. Any detail included is predictable.
10-74

The text doesn't present details to support and expand the main idea on in any way. it misses transition word.
Sentence Fluency

91-100

The piece of text shows a great variety of sentences; simple, compound and complex sentences.
81-90

The piece of text shows that most sentences follow the same pattern, but there is some variety. There is a mix between shorter sentences and longer ones.
75-80

The piece of text shows shorter and simple sentences, Once in a while the student uses compound sentences.
10-74

The piece of text shows run-ons and fragments throughout the piece. Reading the sentences may be challenging.
Word Choice

91-100

The student chooses words carefully, includes specific nouns, strong action verbs, and uncommon adjectives and adverbs, which create vivid pictures and express clear feelings.
81-90

The students chooses some words carefully chosen while others seem ordinary. A clear picture is created.
75-80

The student chooses ordinary words, which show lack of creativeness. Creating a mental image from the words is difficult to do.
10-74

The student lacks expressive language, and some ordinary words are used, which does not allow the reader to have a mental image or clear feelings about the story.
Voice

91-100

The student's voice is appropriate for the prompt or assignment. The reader is drawn closer to the piece and can "hear" the writer. Dialogue is used if appropriate.
81-90

The student's voice heard in the piece is appropriated, but sometimes fades. Dialogue is attempted if appropriate.
75-80

The student's voice is hard to find in the piece, but may appear in a sentence or two. No dialogue at all.
10-74

The student's voice of the piece cannot be heard. No dialogue at all.
Language usage

91-100

The piece of text shows no or very few errors in grammar, punctuation and/or spelling.
81-90

The piece of text shows a few errors in grammar, punctuation and/or spelling; however, it is easy to read.
75-80

The piece of text some errors in grammar, punctuation and/or spelling, it requires some effort to be read.
10-74

The piece of text shows many errors in grammar, punctuation and/or spelling, which make the reading the piece very difficult or impossible.
